In this study, the researchers examined two groups of meditation practitioners:

* Those practising meditation for 12 years

* Those practising meditation for 40 years

Both groups were compared to similarly aged adults who did not meditate…

Those that meditate showed the following characteristics:

* Lower expression of genes linked to inflammation and ageing, including SOCS3, which is associated with chronic stress.

* Reduced cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone that accelerates ageing.

* Faster cognitive processing, comparable to much younger adults.

* Higher scores on brain integration tests, which measure focus, reaction time, and memory.

These findings suggest that regular meditation may help build resilience against the cumulative effects of ageing, offering a natural, drug-free way to support brain health.

Another benefit of meditation is reduced allostatic load – the physiological toll that chronic stress takes on the body over time…

High allostatic load has been linked to high blood pressure, immune dysfunction, and cognitive decline.

But meditation appears to reduce this burden, allowing the body to function more efficiently and preserve its resources for longer.
