Gout flare-ups – they´re common for so many people, especially at this time of year when you tend to indulge in rich meals…
It´s a form of joint pain that usually affects the big toe due to its extremity on the body, and for those familiar with its symptoms, gout is no laughing matter, thanks to the excruciating pain it brings sufferers…
The cause of gout pain is a substance called uric acid, which builds up in the blood.
The trigger of this extreme pain is alcohol and foods with a high content of purines, including fish, seafood and shellfish, organ meats, like liver and kidneys, sweetened fizzy drinks, red meats and gravy.
But as problematic as gout may seem in terms of bringing with it extreme pain, a recent study shows there´s more to worry about than the gout pain, it can actually be deadly!

This is normal for everyone, but for some people, the body produces too much uric acid, at which point the kidneys can no longer filter effectively…

Study shows two months after gout attack are riskiest for heart attack and stroke…
In the study, published in JAMA, the researchers looked at data of more than 62,000 people, of average age of 77, who had suffered gout flare-ups…
Of this group, about 10,000 people had suffered either a heart attack or a stroke within four months after a gout flare-up…
And the risk was greatest within 60 days after their gout attack…
While you´re likely to make the association bwteen the pain in your joints and the cardiovscular event, it´s not the pain itself, but the high uric acid in the blood which the researchers attribute to the heart attacks and strokes…
Other studies have shown that high uric acid levels can lead to high blood pressure and diabetes.
While the researchers were careful to say that reducing uric acid won´t necessarily mean you´d be clear of the risk of having a heart attack or stroke – because the damage would have been done over a period of time in which the uric acid was high, it´s still a good idea to avoid triggers, as well as take steps to protect improve your cardiovascular health, by amending your diet, exercising and monitoring cholesterol and blood pressure levels and other risk markers.
