The study revealed that individuals who consumed an additional 300mg of calcium per day – which is equivalent to drinking a glass of milk – had a 17% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer…

This protective effect was observed across various calcium sources, including dairy products like milk and yoghurt, as well as certain whole grains…

Researchers believe calcium reduces cancer risk by binding to carcinogenic bile acids in the gut, thereby preventing them from damaging the lining of the colon.

Also check with your doctor about taking a vitamin D3 supplement to improve the absorption of calcium in the intestines, and if you take a calcium supplement, also consider taking vitamin K to help prevent calcium deposits in arteries.

Is it too late to add calcium to your diet and change the foods you eat?

The study also highlighted the broader impact of dietary choices on colorectal cancer risk. While calcium-rich foods were found to be protective, other dietary factors, such as high alcohol consumption and the intake of red or processed meats, were associated with an increased risk…

Alcohol was associated with 15% higher risk per 20g per day, and red/processed meat was associated with 8% higher risk per 30g per day.

This study serves as a reminder of the important impact dietary choices can have on our long-term health

Don´t despair if you haven´t been an example of healthy living – remember, by making small but meaningful changes, such as adding a daily serving of yoghurt or whole grains to your diet, you could significantly reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.
