Toothbrushing when hospitilised – can it really be that important?
Especially if you have other health problems to worry about?
Well, turns out it is!
A study, published in the medical journal, JAMA Internal Medicine, found that seriously ill patients were less likely to develop hospital-acquired pneumonia when they brushed their teeth twice a day, in the morning and at night!
They also need to be on ventilators for less time, were able to leave the intensive care unit sooner than those who didn´t brush, and they were less likely to die in ICU!
Can this really be?

How can brushing your teeth reduce your risk of developing hospital-acquired pneumonia and of recovering more quickly?
Brushing your teeth removes the harmful bacteria that can make its way to your lungs…
And if you don´t brush your teeth because you´re lying in a bed in hospital, it causes plaques to build up.
Rinsing doesn´t dislodge the plaque, so a toothbrush is an essential item to pack when you know you´re going to be in hospital.
This little fact could help protect hundreds of thousands of patients every year, as hospital-acquired pneumonia is one of the most common infections that strikes hospitilised patients.
The research looked at data from 15 randomised studies, involving nearly 2,800 patients.
14 of the studies were conducted in ICU, and 13 studies involved patients that had to be on a ventilator.
Those that brushed twice per day were 33% less likely to develop hospital-acquired pneumonia.
Patients were 19% less likely to die in ICU if they brushed their teeth daily, twice a day, and in general, brushing patients were able to leave the ICU faster.
The study also found that brushing more than twice a day didn´t add any benefits, so no need to get compulsive about it…

Other risk factors that increase your chances of developing hospital-acquired pneumonia…
* Previous antibiotic treatment
* Coexisting illnesses that affect the heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys
* Being older than 70 years
* Recent abdominal or chest surgery
* The use of proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, or pantoprazole) for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
And while your immune system is likely compromised when you are hospitilised, which makes you more prone to infection, the act of brushing your teeth can also help you avoid infection out of hospital…
So, pack your toothbrush for all overnight stays, and be sure to brush your teeth twice a day, in and out of hospital…

Feeling run down and drained all the time doesn’t have to be your normal state-of-being.
Unfortunately, it is for millions of people – all over the world – who just can’t seem to keep up anymore.
And there’s a very good explanation for this…
Researchers at numerous institutions, including Harvard University, Johns Hopkins and Stanford University identified that certain chemicals gradually build up in your body over time as you age.
Until one day they flick an internal switch that causes your metabolism to drag along at snail’s pace, drop your oxygen levels and dip your hormone levels.
But with the help of certain nutrients, you could help clear out these chemicals and help the adrenals function.
And when this happens, you could restore your energy levels, concentrate and think more clearly and just feel like you´re coping better…
