Groundbreaking study shows a simple, no-cost activity can help you reduce lower back pain episodes…
In the study, published in The Lancet, 701 people who had recently suffered from a lower back pain episode were recruited…
They were divided into two groups, one of which participated in an individualised walking programme, and received six educational sessions from a physiotherapist over a six month period, while the other group had no intervention at all…
The walking group went almost twice as long without experiencing another lower back pain episode compared to the no-intervention group: 208 days versus 112 days…
The participants on the walking programme experienced:
* Reduced the number of lower back pain episodes
* Had less need for healthcare support
* Took less time off work (by half!)
* And saw an improvement in their quality of life
The lead researcher put these benefits down to a combination of benefits:
* The gentle, oscillatory movements involved in walking help reduce the load on the spine
* They strengthen the muscles that support the spine
* Walking promotes stress release, relaxation and the release of feel-good endorphins, which all help in the healing process.
