Forest bathing – what could this possibly be? In a time when digital screens and urban living dominate our world, the ancient Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, offers a refreshing antidote to stress…

What does forest bathing actually do for your body and mind?
Reduces stress and anxiety:
A systematic review published in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction found that Shinrin-Yoku significantly reduces anxiety and mental distress, particularly in urban populations.
Boosts mood and may help alleviate depression:
A study by Stanford University School of Medicine revealed that people who walked in nature for 90 minutes experienced reduced activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, a brain region linked to rumination and depressive thoughts.
Enhances cognitive function:
Exposure to nature has been linked to improved attention span, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Research from the University of Michigan found that spending just 20 minutes in a natural setting can enhance memory performance and focus by 20%.
Strengthens the immune system:
Forests emit natural compounds called phytoncides, antimicrobial organic compounds released by trees. Studies show that inhaling phytoncides boosts natural killer (NK) cell activity, which helps the body fight infections and diseases. A Japanese study found that participants who spent time in the forest had enhanced immune function for up to 30 days post-exposure.

How to enjoy these benefits without bathing in a forest…
Not all of us live near a forest, so how can we enjoy these benefits without actually being in a forest?
The most important step is to prioritise getting out into nature more often…
If you have a garden – even if it´s a small one, get out for 30 minutes and just lie on a blanket…
Don´t busy yourself with checking phone messages or reading, or even problem-solving – completely disconnect yourself from work and all the problems… Just be mindfully present in nature.
Just lie there, and hear the birds and the trees, breathe deeply and slowly, calm your mind, rest your muscles, let the frazzled energy ebb out and away from your body…
You can also do this in the park…
Do it as often as you can during the week and you´ll notice a difference in your stress levels in a short period of time.
