Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that affects most men over the age of 50…

As the prostate grows, it can press against the urethra, leading to symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine stream, difficulty starting or stopping urination and incomplete bladder emptying…

Dietary improvements can help manage symptoms and potentially slow prostate growth.

How?

BPH is closely tied to hormonal changes – most notably – the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT)… Higher DHT levels stimulate prostate cell growth…

But certain foods and nutrients can influence this hormonal balance – by reducing DHT production or lowering inflammation that causes prostate enlargement.

Foods that may help reduce BPH…

Tomatoes (Lycopene):

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that may reduce prostate size and improve urinary symptoms.

A randomised trial, published in Journal of Nutrition, found that lycopene supplementation stabilised prostate size in men with BPH, while the placebo group saw a 24% increase in volume.

Best sources of lycopene are cooked tomatoes (e.g., tomato paste, sauce) which enhance lycopene bioavailability.

Cruciferous Vegetables (Sulforaphane):

Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts contain sulforaphane, a compound shown to inhibit prostate cell proliferation.

A study in Cancer Prevention Research showed that sulforaphane was found to suppress prostate cancer cell growth and reduce inflammation.

Researchers believe it activates detoxification enzymes and reduces oxidative stress.

Fatty fish (Omega-3s):

Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon, sardines, and mackerel help reduce systemic inflammation, which may alleviate BPH symptoms.

A 2017 trial, published in International Urology and Nephrology, showed that omega-3 supplementation improved urinary symptoms more effectively than medication alone.

Aim for 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week.

More foods that may help reduce BPH…

Avocados and pumpkin seeds (Beta-sitosterol):

These foods are rich in beta-sitosterol, a plant sterol that may improve urinary flow and reduce prostate inflammation.

A Cochrane review found that 130mg per day of beta-sitosterol significantly improved urinary symptoms in men with BPH.

Other sources include soybeans and wheat germ.

Green Tea (Catechins):

Green tea contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which may inhibit DHT production and reduce prostate inflammation.

In a study published in Phytomedicine, EGCG was shown to suppress 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT.

Citrus Fruits (Vitamin C):

Oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are high in vitamin C, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

In research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, higher vitamin C intake was associated with reduced risk of BPH progression.

Other sources of vitamin C include bell peppers, strawberries and kiwis.
